We are thrilled to announce that Cathy Okumura has been named the new unit manager at the Queen Liliʻuokalani Children’s Center in Kona.
Cathy joined the Children's Center as a direct services specialist in 2009 with over 16 years of experience in the social services field, having worked with the developmentally disabled, with Vietnam veterans, and with families in the child welfare system.
With a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Counseling Psychology, Cathy is also a licensed marriage and family therapist; her focus lies in building the capacity of children and families through a cultural framework that emphasizes health and well-being, education, financial health, and utilizing one’s own strengths. Her passion for the ocean and surfing has led to the development of a therapeutic surf group for young children and adolescents.
Cathy says “with the support and wisdom of the Kona staff, I plan to lead the unit in a manner that upholds the Queen's mission, empowers Hawaiian children and their families, and strengthens the West Hawaii community."
She lives in Kona with her husband Daniel, their 16-month-old son, and her mother Connie.
