Throughout the month of July, “MOKU,” the 1st annual Mele Murals ʻAha, has been working to create beautiful paintings throughout Keahuolū. The painting of two murals brought together over 50 ʻōpio from various high schools and programs on Hawaiʻi island with local Mele Mural artists. Before painting began, LT teammates Mike Ikeda, Mana Purdy and Cathy Okamura took the ʻōpio and Mele Mural staff on a huakaʻi around Keahuolū to teach them about its cultural and historical significance. The murals, located at Kona International Marketplace and HPM Building Supply, are a tribute to the history of Keahuolū and our beloved Queen.
What a great learning experience for the keiki involved, and what a beautiful asset to the Keahuolū ahupuaʻa. Mahalo to Mele Murals and the Estria Foundation for your wonderful work in so many of our Hawaiʻi communities! For more information about Mele Murals, visit www.melemurals.org.
