Kaʻohinani Daniels

Kaʻohinani grew up playing on the beaches and hills of her hometown, Kaʻelepulu, Kailua, where she was a dedicated haumāna of Hālau Mōhala ʻIima, and spent countless hours at her neighborhood recreation center learning jazz dance and ballet from teachers who had performed with Giordano Dance Chicago and San Francisco Ballet.

As a Program Coordinator for LT’s ʻŌlino Pathways, Kaʻohi utilizes dance, movement, and moʻomeheu (Hawaiian culture) to guide the kamaliʻi toward healthy habits, achieving holistic well-being, and connecting with their Hawaiian heritage and identity.

Kaʻohi’s role at the Trust involves myriad responsibilities. In addition to her work with the kamaliʻi, she serves as a liaison for Teammates, supporting their needs and exploring partnerships with groups whose missions align with the Trust.

“It is truly a joy to work at the Trust as a conduit for Teammates who have awe-inspiring ideas, passion, and knowledge,” she says.

An example is the Trust’s partnership with New York-based Gibney Dance. In 2023, Kaʻohi was instrumental in bringing the inaugural HANDS ARE FOR HOLDING® workshop series (HAFH) to Hawaiʻi. HAFH uses dance and movement to educate youth about boundaries, respect, healthy relationships, and making informed choices in their actions.

Kaʻohi and her Teammates integrate Hawaiian culture into the HAFH workshops, guiding kamaliʻi in oli, hula ʻauana, moʻolelo, and mele to promote a space for healing. Through these practices, her hope is for the kamaliʻi to deepen their understanding of the Queen’s love for them.

When she is not engaging with the kamaliʻi, Kaʻohi serves as the Designee for the Trust on the Native Hawaiian Education Council. The NHEC’s mission is to coordinate, assess, represent, and provide recommendations to improve educational programs for Native Hawaiians.

As the Designee, she collaborates with the Council and NHEC staff to support the needs of the Hawaiian community. She then shares her valuable insights with Teammates, enabling them to incorporate these findings to support the Queen’s kamaliʻi.

In 2023, Kaʻohi was appointed Vice Chair of the NHEC.

She holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary English and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Leadership. Additionally, she is a certified yoga instructor with 200 hours in the Yoga Alliance.

Before joining the Trust, her professional journey spanned New York City and Europe, where she was immersed in the arts. She also taught at public and private schools in Hawaiʻi.
