Hilo - Nā Kiaʻi ʻĀina: Ages 6-11 - Summer

Kīpuka Hilo

Nā Kiaʻi ʻĀina is a summer program that invites you to care for the land while learning how culture, science, and community work together. Rooted in the values of aloha ʻāina, this program helps you grow the mindset and habits of a kiaʻi, someone who protects, guards, and upholds that which sustains us.

Through hands-on experiences, you’ll explore the ahupuaʻa system and learn how places like the māla and loko iʻa support healthy ecosystems and communities.

Using STEM activities grounded in Hawaiian knowledge, you’ll see how observation, problem-solving, and cultural practices come together to care for place.

This program strengthens your connection to ʻāina while building leadership, responsibility, and confidence. You’ll work alongside peers and mentors, learn by doing, and reflect on your role as a caretaker for future generations.

Nā Kiaʻi ʻĀina is about more than learning facts. It’s about living the values of aloha ʻāina and understanding how your actions matter. You’ll leave with new skills, deeper cultural grounding, and a stronger sense of kuleana to the land that feeds and sustains us.

Come ready to learn, care for place, and grow as a kiaʻi ʻāina.

*All are welcome to apply with preference given to Native Hawaiian kamalei.
