A place-based approach with providing accessibility to university-level education for Hawaiʻi Island youth

Make the most of your summer! Earn COLLEGE CREDITS while experiencing life on a university campus - all at no cost!


Project Goal:

To provide an opportunity to prepare youth for entry into university-level education. Project Mohala will empower youth through place-based curricula, connections to place, service-learning, and sense of identity.

Anyone is able to apply to our programs as long as they meet the eligibility requirements below. Preference is given to children of Native Hawaiian descent. 


Eligibility requirements:

  • Kamaliʻi currently in grades 9 to 12
  • Living in Hawaiʻi
  • Complete Liliʻuokalani Trust Registration Forms


Project Mohala 2023 Timeline

January - February 2023 - Applying to Project Mohala Series

A series of workshops to prepare your UH Hilo Application packet for completion and admission into Project Mohala.



May 30 - June 30, 2023 at UH Hilo

Project Mohala program includes activities, access to on-campus resources and huakaʻi to immerse kamaliʻi into the UH Hilo landscape.
