The Indigenous Insight Podcast Shines a Light on Native Hawaiian Wellbeing

Indigenous Insights: An Evaluation Podcast has released a new episode, "Indigenous Wellbeing and Data Sovereignty," featuring three members of Native Hawaiian charitable trusts, also known as the Aliʻi Trusts.

In this episode, podcast host Gladys Rowe sits down with Dr. Pālama Lee (Liliʻuokalani Trust), Dr. Brandon Ledward (Kamehameha Schools), and Nina Murrow (Queen's Health System) to discuss the legacies their founders left for Native Hawaiians, and their impact on Indigenous evaluation and Native Hawaiian wellbeing.

The presenters discuss the concept of Ea, self-determination, and its significance on research, evaluation, and data. Ea is what drives strong partnerships and collaboration among the Aliʻi Trusts and Native Hawaiian-serving organizations that strive to improve the wellbeing of Native Hawaiians.

These Native Hawaiian organizations include the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Papa Ola Lōkahi, the Consuelo Foundation, and the Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment-Hawaiʻi Affiliate.

Additionally, the podcast provides insight into their research and evaluation and shares how health and social outcomes are impacted by ancestral knowledge, community-driven methods, and data sovereignty.

These have resulted in numerous reports and surveys, including Kūkulu Kumuhana Wellbeing Framework and ʻImi Pono Hawai‘i Wellbeing Survey. They offer insights into how Indigenous self-determination, culture, and spirituality are shaping brighter futures.

Listen to learn more about the important work being done by these organizations.

Correction: The term “micro-grant” used in the podcast should have been “micro-collaboration.”
