Hoʻokahua

The Ho‘okahua program is a two-generation program for young Native Hawaiian mākua (parents) ages 18-26 years parenting kamali‘i (children) ages 0-5 years. Ho‘okahua aims to strengthen and nurture a secure and healthy attachment between mākua and kamali‘i, and prepare our young ‘ohana for independence. 

Eligibility:

Native Hawaiian parenting young adults (18-26 years old) parenting at least one kamali‘i (0-5 years old) from the Wai‘anae Coast. Preference given to mākua who are currently or previously engaged with the child welfare system, homeless or with unstable living conditions, and receiving or eligible for public benefits. 

Phase I of Ho‘okahua focuses on healing, and strengthening and nurturing healthy attachment between makua and kamali‘i. ‘Ohana will:

  • Work 1:1 with an Early Childhood specialist to co-create a plan and receive supports to achieve identified goals in the areas of parenting and family strengthening; 
  • Engage in programs to strengthen attachment and bonding between makua and kamali‘i, and support their kamali‘i development, including Child Parent Psychotherapy, Mom Power®️ and Home Visiting services; and
  • Connect with other Ho‘okahua ‘ohana, learn new skills, and connect with their culture, self and community through weekly meetings.

 In Phase II, Ho‘okahua focuses on moving towards independence, and our young mākua will:

  • Continue working with their EC specialist to achieve their family goals, including identifying goals and receiving support and referrals that will lead to independence in the areas of education/career pathways, housing, and early childcare and preschool; 
  • Continue engaging in programs to strengthen pilina and support their kamali‘i development;
  • Continue engaging in Ho‘okahua bi-weekly meetings for support, building skills, and leadership development;
  • Connect with housing resources to work toward independent living;
  • Enroll and participate in education and/or workforce development programs; and
  • Enroll their kamali‘i in childcare, preschool, and/or Kindergarten as appropriate.

In Phase III, Ho‘okahua focuses on maintenance and ongoing support as needed, monitoring independent living, education and/or workforce success, and assisting kamali‘i and their ‘ohana with transitions to preschool or Kindergarten. Our ‘ohana will:

  • Continue working with their EC specialist to achieve their family, career/education, and independent goals;
  • Continue engaging in programs to strengthen pilina and support their kamali‘i development;
  • Continue engaging in Ho‘okahua monthly meetings for support, building skills, and leadership development;
  • Continue participation in education and/or workforce development programs; and
  • Kamali‘i attending preschool or Kindergarten as appropriate.

This program is free and all are welcome to apply, with preference given to mākua currently or previously engaged with the child welfare system, homelessness or with unstable living conditions are who are receiving/eligible for public benefits.
